A Quest to Excite Teenagers

As a father of three teenagers, two girls and one boy, finding a travel experience that excites all of them can feel like searching for hidden treasure. However, in September 2024, our family set out on a remarkable journey to Al Aqsa (Al-Quds) and Bosnia, and it was nothing short of transformative.

We chose Zaarvel Tours, and their service exceeded our expectations. These tours provided not just adventure but also a trip rich in history, culture, and some of our most cherished family memories.

If you are seeking something meaningful for your 2025 travel plans, these destinations are highly recommended. Flights to these locations are also very affordable right now, making it the ideal time to plan and book your trip.

Planning Ahead: Why Visit Al Aqsa?

Visiting Masjid Al Aqsa is not only spiritually rewarding but also an opportunity to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people. The profound historical and religious significance of this sacred site makes it a must-visit destination.

Zaarvel Tours ensures peace of mind for travellers, providing full refunds for any payments made if flights are cancelled. This allows you to plan with confidence, knowing that your investment is protected.

Al Aqsa: Where Living History Meets Resilience

Visiting Al Aqsa was the highlight of our summer, even with our not-so-easy-to-please teenagers in tow. Walking through the iconic green doors of the Al Aqsa compound felt like stepping into a living museum. Every corner revealed layers of history, bringing the past into sharp focus.

The experience was profound from the moment we arrived. As expected, Israeli guards asked us where we were from as we approached the masjid, a moment we were well prepared for thanks to the pre-tour seminar organised by Zaarvel. Once inside, a deep sense of tranquillity enveloped us, and participating in the early morning Fajr Salah at 4 a.m. became a cherished family memory. The effort to wake up early was well worth it, as the peaceful atmosphere made every step feel rewarding.

Guided Exploration

Our group leader was instrumental in making the experience truly engaging. Their detailed storytelling, historical insights, and local tips enriched every moment. The guide’s ability to connect us with the culture and history turned the visit from a sightseeing trip into an immersive journey.

Even our teenagers, usually glued to their phones, were captivated. The blend of ancient and modern stories about Jerusalem sparked their curiosity. This was made even more meaningful through interactions with the local Palestinian community, who welcomed us warmly.

Connecting with the Palestinian People

Speaking directly with Palestinians added a deeply human element to our visit. Their warmth, humour, and resilience left a lasting impression. Hearing their stories, sharing laughter, and receiving heartfelt duas made the experience truly unforgettable. My children were inspired by the courage and strength of the people defending Al Aqsa, and we left with a deep appreciation for their struggles and their spirit.

Bosnia: Natural Beauty and Warm Welcomes

Our second destination, Bosnia, captivated us with its breathtaking landscapes and the warmth of its people. The country’s rich culture and scenic beauty made every moment feel special.

A Warm Welcome

From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with exceptional hospitality. Many Bosnians spoke Arabic and eagerly welcomed us with smiles. Although my Arabic was limited, my children stepped up to converse fluently, which delighted the locals.

Despite being part of a minority of Muslim visitors from Europe, we felt a strong sense of belonging. Bosnians appeared genuinely happy to host us, and the bonds we formed reminded me of Islam’s spirit of connection and unity.

Scenic Adventures

Our time in Sarajevo and Mostar was filled with unforgettable moments. Some highlights included:

  • Exploring Waterfalls: The children were thrilled to dip their toes and swim in the clear, refreshing waters.
  • Wandering the Old City: We enjoyed watching the bustling streets while sipping mint tea, espresso, and milkshakes, accompanied by delicious milk cakes.
  • Visiting Historic Mosques: The old Turkish-style mosque in the centre of the city was a serene stop. Its historic water feature for ablution felt like a portal to a bygone era.

Evenings at the hotel were equally delightful. A spa with female-only hours allowed my wife and daughters to relax in comfort, while the gym and other facilities offered something for everyone.

Challenging Preconceptions

One of the most impactful moments for my children was meeting Bosnian Muslims who defied their expectations. With blonde hair and blue eyes, many spoke fluent Arabic, challenging our preconceptions and expanding our understanding of the global Muslim community. These conversations left a lasting impression on us all.

Reflections on the Journey

This journey left an indelible mark on my family. The peace and spirituality of Al Aqsa contrasted with the resilience of its defenders. The serene beauty of Bosnia stood in stark contrast to its painful history just decades ago. Together, these experiences offered a profound blend of joy, learning, and reflection.

There is so much to do in both destinations that one visit will never feel enough. We are already planning to return. Bosnia’s adventure offerings, including white-water rafting, hiking, horse riding, and quad biking, are set against stunning scenery that enhances the experience. Hidden villages nestled in the mountains add to the charm, offering warm greetings and cups of tea to visitors.

A Call to Action

If you are looking for meaningful tours in 2025, do not hesitate to visit Al Aqsa and Bosnia. These are not just places to see but experiences to live. The people you meet and the stories you hear will leave a lasting impact, making these journeys truly unforgettable.
